Frequently Asked Questions
What is KPT-1 used for?
KPT-1 is a 1 mil polyimide film tape for masking gold contacts during wave soldering and hot air solder leveling, high-temperature masking, and insulating coils and transformers.
Is KPT-1 the same as Kapton tape?
It is a Kapton™ alternative: a polyimide film tape with silicone adhesive in the same category. Kapton™ is a DuPont trademark, and KPT-1 is not a DuPont product.
What tapes does KPT-1 replace?
The catalog lists it as an alternative to Dielectric Polymer NT-590, Permacel P-221, 3M 5419 and 5433, Shurtape 6325-01, Scapa 557, Saint-Gobain/Furon 2345-1, Dewal 304-1, Ideal 9321 and IT-7170, TLC CT961, Specialty Tapes S2210, Lanmar 595-1, Chemfab 360-1S and tesa 4428.
What temperature can KPT-1 handle?
392°F (200°C) for 30 minutes.
Does KPT-1 leave residue?
It leaves minimal residue when removed after processing. The silicone adhesive thermosets with heat, which increases adhesion during the cycle.
What is the dielectric strength of KPT-1?
Over 4000 V, with a Class H insulation rating.
What is the difference between KPT-1 and KPT-2?
KPT-1 is a 1 mil gold electrical-grade film (2.6 mil total, >4000 V). KPT-2 is a 2 mil amber commercial-grade film (3.5 mil total, >8000 V) with higher tensile and elongation.
Does KPT-1 meet MIL-P-46112B or UL 510?
The polyimide film meets UL 510, and the tape is formulated to meet MIL-P-46112B. Contact us if you need certification documents.
What sizes does KPT-1 come in?
We stock 1" and 2" x 36 yd rolls on a 3" plastic core. Minimum purchase is six 1" rolls or three 2" rolls, sold as packs or by the case. Widths from 1/4" to 4" are available on request.
What is the lead time for KPT-1?
Typically 1–2 weeks.
Does KPT-1 come with a Certificate of Conformance?
Yes. A free Certificate of Conformance is included with every order, certifying the tape conforms to the supplier's product data. No request is needed.
