3M 427 is one of the most recognized aluminum foil tapes in HVAC, construction, and industrial manufacturing. It's also one where buyers routinely pay a brand premium for a performance level that AF-30A not only matches — but significantly exceeds on the specification that matters most: adhesion to metal.
The Case for 3M 427
3M 427 is a 3-mil dead soft aluminum foil tape with an acrylic adhesive and removable paper liner. It's been the HVAC and industrial standard for heat reflection, vapor barrier protection, duct sealing, and masking in paint stripping and electroplating for decades. Its cold temperature performance — rated to −65°F — makes it a go-to for refrigeration and cryogenic applications. It's stocked at every major industrial and aerospace distributor with no lead time and extensive application documentation.
Nobody disputes that 3M 427 works. The question is whether you need to pay 3M prices to get that performance.
AF-30A: Where the Numbers Tell the Story
44% stronger peel adhesion
3M 427 publishes a peel adhesion minimum of 50 oz/in. AF-30A delivers 72 oz/in — 44% above that minimum. In a vapor barrier or HVAC duct application where seam failure means energy loss, moisture intrusion, or system inefficiency, that adhesion gap is the difference between a seal that holds and one that lifts at the edges after a few seasons of thermal cycling.
Thicker total construction
AF-30A's total tape thickness (without liner) is 5.0 mil versus approximately 4.6 mil for 3M 427. Both use 3-mil aluminum foil — the difference is in the adhesive coating thickness, which contributes directly to the higher peel adhesion and better gap-filling on textured or irregular duct surfaces.
302°F temperature ceiling
AF-30A is rated to 302°F — suitable for high-temperature HVAC equipment, exhaust ducting, and industrial process piping where surface temperatures can exceed 250°F. The solvent-based acrylic adhesive maintains its bond at elevated temperatures where less aggressive adhesives start to soften and release.

AF-30A is recognized as an alternative to 3M #427, #3363, and #3367 — three separate 3M SKUs. If your facility stocks multiple 3M foil tape part numbers for different applications, consolidating to AF-30A can simplify your inventory while reducing cost.
Lower cost per roll
AF-30A is available at distributor pricing significantly below 3M 427. On a 60-yard roll at a 3" width, the cost savings per roll are meaningful. Scale that across a commercial HVAC job or an industrial facility's annual tape spend and the savings become a budget line item.
One Honest Caveat: Cold Temperature Range
3M 427 is rated to −65°F. AF-30A is rated to −22°F. If your application involves cryogenic piping, cold storage below −22°F, or aerospace applications requiring extreme cold performance, 3M 427 is the right choice. For standard HVAC, construction, and industrial masking — which covers the vast majority of aluminum foil tape applications — AF-30A's −22°F lower limit is not a practical constraint.
The Jumbo Option for High-Volume Converting
AF-30A is available in 47.2" × 1000M jumbos for converters and distributors who slit to custom widths. If you're buying foil tape in bulk and cutting to size, the jumbo format significantly reduces per-unit cost compared to buying pre-slit rolls.
