3M 471 Alternative: How CVT-636 Delivers 16 OSHA Colors at a Lower Cost
Industrial Tapes · OSHA Color Coding · Lane Marking · Vinyl Tape
3M 471 is the name everyone knows for OSHA floor marking and color coding vinyl tape. It's in every distributor catalog, on every safety manager's approved list, and in virtually every industrial facility in the country. It's also one of the most over-specified — and over-priced — tapes on the market for what it does. CVT-636 is the alternative that matches 3M 471 where it counts and beats it where it matters.
What Makes 3M 471 the Default?
3M 471 is a 5.2-mil matte soft PVC vinyl tape with a rubber adhesive, available in standard OSHA colors for lane marking, floor marking, and color coding applications. It's hand-tearable, conformable, and works reliably from −22°F to 140°F. It's been the industry default for so long that many facilities simply order it by habit — the same way they order 3M 33 electrical tape without ever comparing alternatives.
The problem isn't that 3M 471 is bad. It's that you're paying a brand premium for a product that a well-specified alternative matches or exceeds — particularly when you need more color options or want to reduce cost without sacrificing OSHA compliance.
CVT-636 vs 3M 471: The Key Differences
More colors: 16 vs. 8–10
CVT-636 comes in 16 OSHA colors: black, white, clear, yellow, red, orange, light green, kelly green, emerald green, sky blue, medium blue, dark blue, medium brown, dark brown, gray, and purple. 3M 471's standard color range typically covers 8–10 colors. If your facility uses color-coded zones for multiple hazard types, departments, or safety categories, CVT-636 gives you the full palette without sourcing from multiple suppliers.
Thicker backing: 6.0 mil vs. 5.2 mil
CVT-636 runs 6.0 mil thick versus 3M 471's 5.2 mil. In a floor marking application where tape takes forklift and foot traffic daily, that extra thickness translates to longer service life before the edges start lifting or the tape wears through.
Longer rolls: 60 yards available
CVT-636 comes in both 36-yard (CVT-636) and 60-yard (CVT-660) rolls. 3M 471 is standard at 36 yards. For high-volume lane marking or re-striping large warehouse floors, 60-yard rolls mean fewer roll changes and less waste at the end of each roll.
A-A-1689B Type II conformance
CVT-636 explicitly conforms to A-A-1689B Type II, the federal commercial item description for vinyl pressure-sensitive tape. 3M 471 does not publish this conformance. For government facilities or contractors who need to document compliance against a federal spec, CVT-636 gives you a citation 3M 471 doesn't.
Lower cost per roll
CVT-636 is available at distributor pricing that is significantly lower than 3M 471's retail and distributor pricing. When you're marking thousands of linear feet of warehouse floor or re-striping a facility, the per-roll cost difference adds up quickly — without any compromise on OSHA color compliance.
Where 3M 471 Still Has the Edge
3M 471 carries higher tensile strength (approximately 18 lbs/in vs. CVT-636's 14 lbs/in) and higher elongation (~200% vs. 150%), making it more suitable for applications where the tape needs to stretch around curves or handle significant tension. It's also in stock at virtually every industrial distributor nationwide — no lead time, no minimum order. And decades of field performance documentation make it easy to specify and approve in established procurement systems.
If your application involves high-tension wrapping, tight curves, or you need tape off the shelf today, 3M 471 is the safer choice. For standard floor marking and color coding where you're buying in volume? CVT-636 is the smarter buy.
A Note on Special Order
CVT-636 is available as a special order product through Skytapes. Minimum order quantities apply. For facilities that plan their tape purchases in advance — which is most facilities doing scheduled floor marking programs — the lead time is a non-issue and the cost savings justify the order planning.
