Nitto P-629 is a tape that cargo compartment technicians have relied on for years. Its bright-white glass cloth backing is tuned to blend with Tedlar (PVF) cargo liner panels, its blue PE liner makes application clean, and it comes in standard, skip-slit (P-629SL), and printed skip-slit (P-629PRL) versions for fast field work. It's also a product where the data sheet stops at "compliant" — no burn lengths, no flame times, no outgassing numbers, and qualification listed to the older Boeing BMS 5-146 Rev A. Polyken 296FR meets every core spec Nitto P-629 meets, qualifies to the newer BMS 5-146 Rev B, publishes actual flammability test values, adds ASTM E595 outgassing data, and comes with a lot-specific Certificate of Compliance on every order.

What Nitto P-629 Does Well

Nitto P-629 is a single-coated, modified-acrylic flame-retardant glass cloth seam tape, qualified to Boeing BMS 5-146 Type I, Class 1, Grade A and compliant with FAR 25.853(a) and FAR 25.855(d) — legal for use in aircraft cargo compartments under FAA regulations. Made in the USA by Nitto Denko America, it carries a few genuine strengths: a higher published tensile strength of 150 lb/in, a published adhesion-to-PVF figure of 35 oz/in (the directly relevant value for Tedlar cargo liner work), and a bright-white backing specifically tuned to blend with PVF liner panels for an appearance-matched seam. Its three liner options — standard, skip-slit (SL), and printed skip-slit (PRL) — give technicians flexibility for fast field application.

What the data sheet doesn't tell you is how well it performs in flammability testing — because Nitto publishes compliance, not measured performance data.

Where Polyken 296FR Pulls Ahead

1. Boeing BMS 5-146 Rev B — the newer qualification

Polyken 296FR is qualified to Boeing BMS 5-146 Rev B, Type I, Class 1, Grade A. The Nitto P-629 datasheet lists Rev A. When a maintenance manual or engineering order references the current revision, having the tape qualified to Rev B eliminates the revision-mismatch question before it starts.

2. Quantified flammability data — not just "compliant"

This is where Polyken 296FR genuinely separates itself. The lot-specific COC for every shipment includes measured test values from three specimens:

The FAR 25.855(d) 45° burn test results are equally strong: zero burn through across all three specimens, zero flame time, zero after glow. The tape doesn't just pass — it passes with substantial margin.

3. ASTM E595 outgassing data

Polyken 296FR publishes ASTM E595 outgassing data: 0.36% total mass loss and 0.01% collected volatile condensable material. Nitto P-629 does not publish outgassing data. For programs where material qualification requires low outgassing documentation — particularly cargo compartments near sensitive avionics or sealed environmental systems — this data is essential and Polyken 296FR has it.

4. FAR 25.856(a) Radiant Heat Panel — listed

Polyken 296FR lists FAR 25.856(a) Radiant Heat Panel compliance. Nitto P-629 does not list this. Where a program calls out radiant-heat-panel qualification, the listing removes another approval question from the maintenance event.

5. Five Boeing SL approvals listed individually

Polyken 296FR lists individual Boeing Service Letter approvals for the 737, 747, 757, 767, and 777 programs. When a maintenance manual or engineering order references a specific Boeing SL, having that SL explicitly cited in your tape's documentation eliminates the approval ambiguity that can delay a maintenance event.

6. Airbus ABD0031 across the product line

Polyken 296FR is approved to Airbus ABD0031 Paragraphs 7.3.2 and 7.4 across the product line. Nitto's ABD0031 coverage applies to the base P-629 only. For mixed-fleet operations running both standard and skip-slit-equivalent products, line-wide Airbus coverage keeps the documentation consistent.

7. Published temperature range and lot-specific COC

Polyken 296FR publishes an operating range of −40°F to 275°F (−40°C to 135°C) and uses a bromide-free acrylic adhesive; the Nitto datasheet does not publish an operating temperature. And every shipment of Polyken 296FR from Skytapes includes a Berry Global Certification of Compliance with lot number, date of manufacture, expiration date, applicable specifications, and flammability test data — signed by Quality Control. This documentation is standard, not a special request. For regulated maintenance environments where traceability is mandatory, this is the difference between tape you can use immediately and tape that sits in receiving inspection waiting for paperwork.

Where Nitto P-629 Still Has the Edge

To be straight about it: Nitto P-629 has real advantages. It publishes a higher tensile strength — 150 lb/in vs. 134 lb/in — though both figures are far in excess of what cargo seam sealing requires, so the difference isn't a practical performance limitation for either tape. It also publishes an adhesion-to-PVF figure (35 oz/in), the value directly relevant to Tedlar cargo liner work, where Polyken 296FR publishes adhesion to steel only.

Its bright-white backing is tuned to blend with Tedlar (PVF) liner panels for an appearance-matched seam, and its three off-the-shelf liner options — standard, skip-slit (SL), and printed skip-slit (PRL) — speed up field application in a way the standard LDPE liner on Polyken 296FR doesn't match. As a long-established product, it's also broadly stocked and familiar across aerospace MRO.

The Bottom Line

Both tapes meet BMS 5-146 Type I, Class 1, Grade A. Both comply with FAR 25.853(a) and 25.855(d). Both are flame-retardant glass cloth cargo compartment tapes made in the USA. The substitution is direct.

Where they differ is in what Polyken 296FR adds: the newer BMS 5-146 Rev B qualification, fully quantified flammability values on a lot COC, ASTM E595 outgassing data, FAR 25.856(a) radiant-heat-panel listing, five individually listed Boeing SL approvals, and line-wide Airbus ABD0031 coverage. Where Nitto P-629 holds the edge is in higher published tensile strength, a published adhesion-to-PVF figure, an appearance-matched bright-white backing, and off-the-shelf skip-slit and printed-liner options. For programs that need documentation depth and approval breadth, Polyken 296FR is the stronger product; for appearance-matched seams on PVF panels and fast skip-slit application, Nitto P-629 keeps its niche.
