Boeing BMS 5-133 Carpet Tape Guide
Boeing BMS 5-133 Flame-Retardant Carpet Tape — Type & Class Explained
What BMS 5-133 covers, how to read a Type II callout, and the Boeing-approved Polyken 108FR that meets it — in stock with a free Certificate of Conformance.
Boeing Material Specification BMS 5-133 covers pressure-sensitive, flame-retardant carpet tapes used to secure carpet and floor coverings in aircraft cabins, where the tape must pass FAR 25.853(a) flammability requirements. The specification is divided into Types and Classes by weight and color. For the standard Type II, Class 1 & 2 requirement, Polyken 108FR is the qualified product — a double-coated cloth tape with a flame-retardant rubber adhesive.

Polyken 108FR →What the BMS 5-133 callout codes mean
BMS 5-133 classifies carpet tapes by Type (construction and weight) and Class (color). Here is how the common designations break down:
Standard-weight double-coated carpet tape, white / natural (max ~16 oz/yd²). The most common cabin-carpet requirement.
Same standard-weight construction, black (max ~16 oz/yd²). Chosen where a dark adhesive line is preferred.
Heavier-weight white carpet tape (max ~24 oz/yd²) for higher-hold applications.
Lightweight differential-tack tape (~5–9 oz/yd², black on side 2) used for weight savings. See note below.
Polyken 108FR covers Type II, Class 1 and Class 2. Because it's offered in both Natural (white) and Black adhesive, the same product line satisfies both the Class 1 and Class 2 callouts — you choose the color to match your drawing.
Type IV callouts: we regularly get RFQs for BMS 5-133 Type IV (the lightweight differential-tack class, formerly served by Polyken 1111). That product is not currently available from the manufacturer. If your drawing specifically requires Type IV, contact us — we can advise on status and alternatives, but we cannot substitute Type II where Type IV is specified.
Cross-referencing the Nitto P-55? Polyken 108FR is the Boeing-approved equivalent, in stock and typically lower cost. See our full side-by-side comparison and substitution guidance on the Nitto P-55 alternative page.

Frequently asked questions
What is Boeing BMS 5-133?
BMS 5-133 is a Boeing Material Specification for flame-retardant pressure-sensitive carpet tapes used to secure carpet and floor coverings in aircraft cabins. Tapes are classified by Type and Class, and must pass FAR 25.853(a) flammability requirements.
What is the difference between BMS 5-133 Type II Class 1 and Class 2?
Both are standard-weight double-coated carpet tapes; the difference is color. Class 1 is white / natural and Class 2 is black. Polyken 108FR is offered in both Natural and Black adhesive, so the same product satisfies either callout depending on the color you select.
Which tape meets BMS 5-133 Type II?
Polyken 108FR is the qualified product for BMS 5-133 Type II, Class 1 & 2. It is a double-coated cloth tape with a flame-retardant rubber adhesive, also approved to BAC 5034-4 Section 5.1.a(1)(b) and FAR 25.853(a).
Do you carry BMS 5-133 Type IV?
Type IV is the lightweight, differential-tack class (formerly the Polyken 1111), which is not currently available from the manufacturer. We can advise on status and alternatives, but a Type II tape cannot be substituted where Type IV is specified. Contact us with your drawing callout.
