What each tape is used for
Named for the gaffer — the chief lighting technician on a film set. The woven cloth backing carries a matte coating that kills reflections, so a strip at the edge of frame doesn’t flare under a light. The synthetic rubber adhesive holds for the run of a shoot or a show, then releases without pulling paint or leaving gum. It tears straight by hand in both directions, so a crew can work one-handed in the dark.

Built around a polyethylene film co-extruded onto a cloth carrier. The poly layer sheds water and stops the tape delaminating; the cloth scrim gives it body and lets it tear by hand. The natural rubber adhesive is aggressive and fast-grabbing, happy to bite into dusty, rough or irregular surfaces. That same aggressiveness is why it leaves residue — and why it isn’t the tape for a finished wall or a client’s floor.

Frequently asked questions
Is gaffer tape just expensive duct tape?
No — they are different products built on different chemistry. Gaffer tape uses a matte coated cloth backing with a synthetic rubber adhesive engineered for clean removal. Duct tape uses a polyethylene-coated cloth backing with an aggressive natural rubber adhesive engineered to seal and hold. They look similar on the shelf and behave completely differently on the job.
Does gaffer tape really leave no residue?
On clean, sound, non-porous surfaces, yes. Pro Gaff P-628 is formulated to peel away without leaving adhesive behind. Removal is cleanest within the intended service window and at normal room temperature. Very old tape, sustained heat, or fragile surfaces such as flaking paint, wallpaper and unsealed drywall can still cause problems — test an inconspicuous area first.
Can I use duct tape instead of gaffer tape on a film set?
It is a poor substitute. The silver polyethylene backing reflects light and reads on camera, the natural rubber adhesive softens under hot fixtures, and it leaves residue on floors, walls and cable jackets that venues and rental houses will bill you for. Duct tape’s place on set is off-camera rigging and repair, not cable dressing or spike marks.
Which tape is stronger?
It depends what you mean by strong. Pro Gaff P-628 has roughly double the tensile strength — 50 lb/in versus 26 lb/in — with only 4% elongation, so it resists pulling and creep. Duck Pro PC 9 has slightly higher peel adhesion to steel — 80 oz/in versus 75 oz/in — and 20% elongation, so it grabs harder and conforms better to rough surfaces. Gaffer tape holds tension; duct tape holds grip.
Is gaffer tape waterproof?
Gaffer tape is moisture resistant, not waterproof, and it is not intended for sealing or outdoor exposure. Where water, weather or wash-down is involved, the polyethylene backing on Duck Pro PC 9 is the correct choice.
Can I use duct tape on HVAC ducts?
Despite the name, standard cloth duct tape is not a code-approved duct sealant. Sealing rigid ductwork generally requires a UL 181A-P listed foil tape, and flexible duct requires a UL 181B-FX listed product. Use Duck Pro PC 9 for bundling, sealing poly, protection and general repair — and a properly listed foil tape or mastic on ductwork itself.
How long can I leave each tape in place?
Both are temporary-service tapes. Duck Pro PC 9 is rated for 30-day clean removal indoors. Pro Gaff P-628 is designed for the duration of a production, install or event — typically days to weeks. The longer either tape stays down, and the more heat and UV it sees, the more likely it is to leave something behind.
Can you write on gaffer tape?
Yes. The matte cloth backing takes marker and pen readily, which is why crews use white and colored gaffer tape to label cases, packs, boards and cables. The glossy polyethylene surface on duct tape smears and resists ink.
