The Case for 3M 425
3M 425 is a 3-mil dead soft aluminum foil tape with a transparent acrylic adhesive, supplied self-wound with no liner. It's been an aerospace and industrial standard for heat reflection, vapor barrier protection, sealing, and masking in paint stripping and electroplating for decades. Its cold temperature performance — rated to −65°F — makes it a go-to for refrigeration and extreme-cold applications, and its documented low moisture vapor transmission rate makes it easy to qualify as a sealant. It's stocked at major industrial distributors with extensive application documentation.
Nobody disputes that 3M 425 works. The question is whether you need to pay 3M prices to get the performance your application actually requires.
Polyken 345SW: Where the Numbers Tell the Story
45% stronger adhesion to steel
3M 425 publishes a 180° peel adhesion of 47 oz/in. Polyken 345SW delivers 68 oz/in adhesion to steel — roughly 45% higher. (Worth noting: the two values use different test methods — Polyken per PSTC-101, 3M per ASTM D3330 — so it isn't a perfectly apples-to-apples figure, but the gap is wide enough to reflect a genuinely more aggressive bond.) In a masking, sealing, or vapor barrier application where edge lift means rework or moisture intrusion, that adhesion margin is the difference between a seal that holds and one that releases after repeated thermal cycling.
350°F temperature ceiling
Polyken 345SW is rated to 350°F — 50 degrees higher than 3M 425's 300°F long-term ceiling. That extra headroom makes it well-suited to heat shielding, eliminating "hot spots" in industrial maintenance, and high-temperature ducting where surface temperatures climb. The acrylic adhesive maintains its bond and clean removal at elevated temperatures.
Thicker total construction
Polyken 345SW's total tape thickness is 5.0 mil versus 4.6 mil for 3M 425. Both are built on roughly 3-mil dead soft aluminum foil — the difference is in the adhesive coating, which contributes directly to the higher adhesion and better gap-filling on textured or irregular surfaces. Both are self-wound with no release liner, so there's no liner waste to manage during application.
Broader aerospace specification coverage
Both tapes meet FAR 25.853(a) for aircraft flammability. But Polyken 345SW also explicitly carries SAE AMS-T-23397B (which supersedes MIL-T-23397A & B), L-T-80B, and — notably — Gulfstream GAMPS 4002 and GAT100BC approvals. If your program calls out any of those aerospace specs, the 345SW answers them directly off the data sheet, whereas the 3M 425 instead lists UL 746C and L-T-80C. For aircraft sealing, masking, and composite work tied to those callouts, the Polyken is the straightforward specification match.
Solvent-resistant for masking duty
The 345SW's acrylic adhesive is solvent resistant and removes cleanly without residue, making it a strong performer for masking in paint stripping and electroplating processes — the same demanding chemical environments where 3M 425 has long been used.
Two Honest Caveats: Cold Range and Moisture Data
3M 425 is rated to −65°F; Polyken 345SW is rated to −40°F. If your application involves cryogenic piping, cold storage below −40°F, or extreme-cold aerospace use, the 3M 425 has the colder headroom. The 425 also publishes a specific moisture vapor transmission rate (0.77 g/m²/24h), which the Polyken data sheet does not — so if you need documented WVT numbers to qualify a sealant, 3M states a figure you can cite directly. 3M also rates the 425 slightly higher in tensile strength (28 vs. 26 lb/in) and elongation (6% vs. 3%), the latter giving it a small edge for conforming to tight contours. For the broad majority of aerospace masking, sealing, and high-heat work, none of these is a practical constraint against the 345SW.
